Oxigen, the company which won the Westmeath County Council tender for domestic waste in the county, is one of the largest employers throughout the Midlands employing a total of 48 people in the region; 10 in Laois, 22 in Offaly, and now a total of 16 in Westmeath.
These new jobs for Westmeath have been created since the start of the year when Oxigen took over the blue bin service in the county. Today the company employs two customer service representatives, three drivers, three operatives, as well as two full-time staff in the Athlone Civic Amenity site, two full-time staff at the Mullingar Civic Amenity site, a full-time person on the helpline, and one person working part-time across the county.
One of those new employees, Pat Keena, said, “It's great to see a major player like Oxigen coming to the county and generating new jobs. I had been working for Gannon Concrete in Kilbeggan but they went into receivership. Obviously, from a personal point of view I am delighted Oxigen have come to Westmeath.”
John Brick, head of domestic sales, said, “We were, of course, delighted to have secured this contract in Westmeath and will endeavour to do our absolute best to ensure all our customers receive a first class service and in the process hopefully create even more jobs.”
Some of the other staff employed locally include Stephen Corroon, Declan Hynes, Brendan Keena, Ronan Keegan, Brendan Keane, and Catriona McCann.
Oxigen was started by Sean Doyle in 1987 and now employs over 300 people and manages the waste streams of 100,000 domestic, commercial, and industrial customers throughout Ireland.
