Athlone U14 footballers travelled to Malin, County Donegal on Thursday last to represent Westmeath in this year’s All-Ireland Feile competition. Having won their first two group games against Malin and Carndonagh (both Donegal ) they then accounted for O’Loughlin Gaels (Kilkenny ) to emerge from their group. Charlie McMickan bagged an impressive 2-4 in this game to help send his side through to the all-Ireland semi-final against North Longford Gaels.
After a slow start which saw them trail 1-4 to no score the Athlone boys found their stride and held a two point lead with seven minutes remaining. However it was the Longford side which finished the strongest, to run out winners on a scoreline of 2-8 to 3-2. They went on to win the final 2-4 to no score against Waterford, leaving Athlone wondering what might have been.
Well done to the team and their mentors who can be proud of the way in which they represented Westmeath.
