Athlone sprinter carries Olympic flag in Limerick

A total of 10 athletes and four coaches and volunteers from Athlone Special Olympics Club will be part of the Connaught squad at the Special Olympics Ireland Games taking place at the University of Limerick (UL ) this week from June 9-13.

Sprinter James Carr took the honour of carrying the Olympic torch for Connaught at the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics Ireland Games in Thomond Park in Limerick on Wednesday.

James, from Moydrum is a member of Athlone Special Olympics Club and is running in the 100 and 200 metres sprints at UL.

This is the first time the Athlone club has been represented and it is a huge achievement for this fledgling club.

The athletes are part of the Connaught team and will compete in basketball, track and field, and swimming.

The full list of athletes travelling includes: James Carr, Ian McLoughlin, Michael Egan, Enda Beattie, Michael Igoe, Michael Glynn, Paul D’alton, Angela Hughes, Sarah Sheehan, and Tara Phelan.

Mick Lynch is the Connaught basketball coach and volunteers Imelda Sheeran, Sandra Costello, and Marian Lynch will accompany the athletes for the stay in Limerick.
