Two Athlone architecture projects are among the 55 projects on the shortlist for this year’s Irish Architecture Awards, which was recently announced by the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI ). The projects are the Engineering and Informatics building in Athlone Institute of Technology, designed by McCullough Mulvin Architects; and the Athlone Army Memorial, designed by Keith Williams Architects. Both were completed last year.
The development of the Engineering and Informatics Building, AIT, comprises six blocks of three storeys with a series of internal and external courtyards. The accomodation consists of classrooms, lecture theatre, offices, and ancillary functions appropriate to a modern school of engineering. The building incorporates facilities for six departments within an environmentally responsive envelope achieved through the exploitation of orientation and materials.
The new Athlone Army Memorial, situated at the base of Athlone Castle’s walls with their own proud 800 year military history, provides a powerful backdrop for the new monument, erected in memory of soldiers of the Brigade who have died in action on missions abroad.
