Demonstrating a solution to the nation’s flood problems

Minister for Housing and Local Services, Michael Finneran recently launched the Big Bag Flood Defence System, for newly founded Irish Company - Global Flood Solutions.

The Big Bag System, a German-designed innovation can be assembled in minutes and provide an environmentally friendly mass flood defence system for homes and businesses.

At the launch Minister Finneran commended the innovation of the award winning Big Bag Flood Defence System and stated he “has no doubt that many local authorities will be interested in the quick, simple and effective system to complement their range of options in responding to the threat of flooding”.

Just a few short months ago, flood waters destroyed homes and businesses and ravaged communities across Ireland, causing millions of euros worth of damage. The mop-up operation involving local authorities, emergency personnel, thousands of volunteers, and those affected by the floods was on a massive scale and cost millions.

Brendan J Kelly from the Irish Insurance Federation was present along with a panel of speakers including the mayor of Roscommon County Council Tony Ward; PJ Moran, consultant engineer; and Ulrich Dowznik, co-inventor of the Big Bag System.

Mr Kelly stated that in his “35 years in the insurance business, the floods of November 2009 were the worst he had witnessed from an insurance perspective”. Mr Kelly went on to say that “as a result - the total cost from flood insurance claims alone was almost€ 244 million and 4,629 families were directly affected. We now have an internationally acclaimed affordable solution in the Big Bag System at our disposal and the severity of the disaster we saw in November 2009 need never happen again.”
