Council representatives are to meet with Iarnrod Eireann to address works to be carried out at Moate railway station and at the railway gates on the Mount Temple road.
Moate Cllrs Joe Whelan and Tom Allen expressed concern at this week’s Athlone Area Meeting at the derelict state of the railway station and road safety at the gates.
“Iarnrod Eireann have an asset in the railway station, and it has been left to go to rack and ruin. It is a disgrace that it is allowed to go derelict,” said Cllr Whelan.
Cllr Allen added that the railway gates on the Mount Temple Road, and the road itself, are “anything but safe”.
“There are no sight lines and the gates need to be widened. Iarnrod Eireann seems to be living in a world of its own. An elderly couple live in the house on the corner and the road is sunk. It needs to be repaired.
“It is a great idea to get Iarnrod Eireann on site and it has to be done before someone is harmed.”
