Euro-Festival preparations under way in Athlone

The planning process for this summer’s Euro-Festival, to take place in Athlone from July 24 to 31, has been set in motion by Athlone Town Council.

Because the event is expected to attract over 5,000 visitors to the town, the council is obliged to advertise the event and to invite submissions from the public.

An event management plan, to include emergency, road management, and environmental plans, is in the process of being prepared.

The European People’s Festival, known as Euro-Festival 2010, promises to bring a unique flavour of the diverse culture and language of several European nationalities to the town.

Athlone will host teams from 14 different countries for a festival of sports, music, cultural performances, cookery demonstrations, street theatre, photography, and painting competitions.

A promotional village located on the river front at Athlone Castle will offer ‘a taste of Europe’ with food, arts, crafts, souvenirs, and tourist information on the participating countries and towns.

A festival fringe programme will be packed with free events and entertainment during the day and evening, including street theatre, exhibitions, popular Irish bands, and traditional Irish music and dance.

Further information on the festival and the programme of events is available at www.athlone.ie
