Young people from Athlone shortlisted for environmental awards

Young people from Athlone have been selected as four of 50 shortlisted projects in ECO-UNESCO’s Young Environmentalist Awards 2010.

The groups from St Josephs College, Summerhill are recognised for their outstanding environmental action projects on many issues such as backyard burning, environmental awareness, and local biodiversity, and are vying for the top prize in the Senior Biodiversity, Climate Change, and Waste categories (for groups of young people aged 15-18 ).

“We are extremely proud of all the young environmentalists that participated in this year’s programme,” said Elaine Nevin, national director of ECO-UNESCO. “All of the shortlisted projects show a great deal of creativity and innovation in their approach to protecting the environment and promoting environmental awareness.”

All of Athlone can come out to support the great achievements of the young people when the 2010 Young Environmentalist Awards Showcase opens to the public on Wednesday May 12 at Dublin’s Mansion House.
