Marist brother on child abuse charges

A former Brother was remanded on continuing bail until June 23 in the District Court this week (April 21 ) to await a book of evidence after being charged with six counts of indecent assault against four boys at the Marist primary school in Retreat on a number of dates between 1978 and 1982.

After an application by the 67-year-old’s solicitor to injunct the press from publishing the name and address of the defendant was granted by Judge David Anderson, he then extended the order to include the specific dates of the alleged offences in case any victim might be identified through this.

The court heard from Detective John Mullgan how he arrested the defendant that morning and that there was no garda objection to bail so long as he surrendered his passport and continued living at his given address in Mayo.

The tall, grey-haired man, described in court as “a retired teacher” did not speak throughout the five minute hearing, and was accompanied from court by a female companion.
