The sixth class of St Clare’s NS in Tubberclare, Glasson have beaten off creative competition to be announced as one of February’s secondary school finalists in the Boyne Valley Honey Book of Kells National Art Competition.
The class produced a bespoke work of art based on the brief of using inspiration from either the Book of Kells itself, the monks who wrote and illustrated the tome, or life in the 9th century.
Speaking about their entry, their teacher Eithne Gallagher said, “Every year the sixth class do a project on Clonmacnois because the school is very near to the ancient monastic site... We created our work of art using the method of batik. This artistic process involves tracing around drawings on a canvas (we used an old sheet ) with wax and then applying ink. The class was really delighted with the overall results, and we were even more excited to hear we got through to the finals.”
According to the competition judges, “The clasAs really pushed the boundaries of the brief with their entry which is great, as it exemplifies the level of artistic innovation and creativity that is present in young Irish artists today. The whole Boyne Valley Honey team were really impressed with their level of ingenuity and hard work.”
The grand prize winners will be announced mid April when Miriam O'Callaghan will present prizes of three fine art facsimile copies of the Book of Kells.
