Back to school for Longford/Westmeath Oireachtas members

Longford/Westmeath Oireachtas members will go back to school today, Friday, when they pay a visit to students at Templemichael College Longford.

The local Oireachtas members will spend time with Junior Certificate CSPE (Civil, Social and Political Education ) students at Ard Scoil Na mBraithre as part of the Houses of Oireachtas Education Outreach Programme.

The programme, which is being rolled out to secondary schools across the country, has been designed to increase the understanding of the role of elected representatives, explain the functions of the Dáil and Seanad, and ultimately improve voter participation.

During the class, Oireachtas members will be given the chance to outline their roles and explain the work of the Dáil and Seanad, while students will have the opportunity to question them on a wide range of local and national topics.

The event is part of a wider programme of education about the political system in Ireland. The programme, which was devised in consultation with education professionals, is focused on Junior Certificate students as part of the CSPE curriculum.
