Several incidents of cars careering out of control due to flooding on the M6 were reported on Tuesday this week.
Gardai in Athlone were notified of three separate incidents which occurred on the M6 between Athlone and Moate, after a night of heavy rain on Monday rendered roads dangerously flooded and driving conditions unsafe.
While several cars lost control after hitting areas of excessive surface water, there were no serious injuries.
Severe flooding was also reported under the railway bridges on the Ballymahon Road and Coosan Road in Athlone on Tuesday morning, with motorists warned to avoid the areas.
Many farmers across the Midlands also reported flooded farmland, particularly in the Shannon catchment area and along the river Suck in Roscommon.
