On April 13 at 8pm in the Dean Crowe Theatre, Athlone Film Club presents the surreal comedy gem, Rumba.
It’s Jacques Tati meets Mr Bean in this wonderful Belgo-French slapstick comedy that has seduced film festival audiences around the world, directed by and starring Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon, and Bruno Romy. The film opened in France in September 2008 and has had an audience of over 100,000 people in four weeks.
Fiona and Dom are teachers at a rural school. They share a passion for Latin dance and they’re deeply in love. On weekends, they enter dance competitions around the country. Their house is crammed with trophies.
One night, as they are coming back from a competition, they encounter a man on a clumsy suicide mission, standing in the middle of the road. They swerve to avoid him and crash into a wall, and their life is thrown into turmoil.
Far from being a bleak drama, Rumba has a resolutely optimistic feel, which has characterised this directorial trio since their first feature, Iceberg.
In keeping with the great silent comics, Abel, Gordon, and Romy depict a stylised and colourful world – for this story of thwarted love punctuated by flashes of musical comedy.
