Been meaning to get to know your home town a little better? Well here’s your chance. The ‘Discover Athlone’ open day takes place this weekend, offering an array of events and activities to suit all the family. And better still - they’re free!
This Sunday October 5, from 12 noon to 6pm, locals are encouraged to come along and enjoy an afternoon of free activities with fun for all the family. Why not join in an historical town walk, face painting, arts and crafts, music, and much, much more?
Among the central events taking place on Sunday are a walking tour of Athlone with local historian Donal O'Brien, departing from the entrance of Athlone Castle at 4pm.
A street display and sale of arts and crafts by local artists will take place in Athlone Castle Courtyard and St Peter's Square from 12 noon to 3pm.
Boat trips will depart from the Strand and the Quay at 2.30pm, while live entertainment is scheduled for the Radisson SAS Hotel, Shamrock Lodge Country House Hotel, and the Prince of Wales Hotel.
Especially for the little ones, Glendeer Pet farm will host a Pets Corner in Golden Island Shopping Centre to coincide with the prize-giving for the Athlone Primary Schools Art Competition. The prize-giving will take place at 12 noon - adults also welcome!
A free bus will depart Athlone Castle at 12 noon and at 3pm for those who wish to enjoy the magic and solitude of Clonmacnoise and visit the newly established craft village of Ballinahown.
Various theatre performances will also take place at Passionfruit Theatre, Dean Crowe Theatre, and Athlone Little Theatre.
