New civic offices and sports complex among capital projects

Chairman of Mullingar Town Council, Cllr Mick Dollard, received a breakdown of capital projects under the control of Westmeath County Council for the current year and proposals for 2009, at the monthly Town Council meeting last week.

The capital schemes currently underway by the local authority include the construction of new civic offices at Westmeath County Council headquarters and planning for Mullingar Integrated Sports and Leisure Complex, with works currently underway on the N52 at Rathconnell.

Tenders are being assessed for the design and build of the Clonmore Link Road Bridge, with works to commence later this year or early in 2009. Meanwhile, works are currently underway on the southern portion of the Robinstown Link Road, which will serve Mullingar Integrated Sports and Leisure Complex.

Other capital projects underway are the provision of playgrounds at Mullingar Town Park, Multyfarnham, Moate, Delvin, Coosan, Kilbeggan, and the Mullingar Cycle Hub. Meanwhile, the provision of enterprise units at Castlepollard are nearing completion, while safety works are complete at The Beehive on the N52. Safety works are nearing completion at Carrick, Dalystown, on the N52.

Preliminary construction works are currently underway at Walderstown, while tenders for the design of Garrycastle Bridge have been received. The assessment should be completed this month, with work to commence next year. Land negotiations are currently ongoing regarding the Clara/Camagh Link Road.

In the area of regional road signposting, the contact is complete on the R389 (Kilbeggan to Skeagh Cross ). Works are underway on the R390 from Mullingar to Athlone, while contracts have been awarded for the R394 from Mullingar to Finea and the R392 from Mullingar to Ballymahon.

Other capital projects include the N6 (Phase 2 ) from Kilbeggan to Athlone which is now complete, village enhancement projects in Multyfarnham, Kinnegad and Rochfortbridge, Mullingar Sewerage Improvement Scheme, Rochfortbridge Sewerage Scheme, Clonmellon Sewerage Scheme, Castletown Geoghegan Sewerage Scheme, Kinnegad Waste Water Treatment Plant Upgrade, an emergency watermain at Ballinahown, water main replacement at Russellstown Road and replacement of a sewer at Main Street, Kinnegad.

The Ballykeeran/ Glasson/ Coosan Sewerage Scheme will commence shortly. The local authority has also provided for 55 social housing units and 26 affordable housing units at Raithin, Mullingar. Nineteen of these are to be completed in October 2008, with the remaining to be completed next January.

Meanwhile, 39 social housing units and 19 affordable housing units at Boreen Bradach, Kinnegad, will be completed later this month, while four Older Persons' Dwellings in Rathwire will be finished by next January. Three rural cottages will also be completed this month. Two social housing units at Grange Crescent, Mullingar, seven social housing units at Markethill, Ballymore, six social housing units at Castletown Geoghegan, and six rural houses are all due to commence before the end of this year and are expected to be completed by mid-2009.
