A new design for Garrycastle Bridge has seen the height increased by over half a metre, after it emerged the original design was too low to allow trains to pass under safely.
While the planning process had already been commenced under the original design, it emerged that Iarnród Éireann was unhappy with the amount of vertical clearance for trains, and it was decided the height of the bridge be raised by 0.662 metres.
There were also some changes made to the width of the bridge’s carriageways, cycle tracks, footpaths, and verges in the design.
Councillors were informed of the variations to the original plan by director of services Barry Kehoe at last week’s Athlone Area meeting. They approved the recommencement of the part 8 planning process, which is how a local authority applies to itself for planning permission.
