€300k for Glasson traffic calming

Traffic calming measures for Glasson are to be completed this year after funding of €300,000 was made available by the National Roads Authority for the scheme.

Westmeath County Council prepared a scheme and cost estimate during 2009 for traffic calming on the N55 through Glasson village.

Traffic calming measures will include the erection of traffic calming gateways on each approach to the village on the N55, the creation of new speed limits, and the extension of public lighting.

The works will also include the construction of a pelican-style pedestrian crossing in the centre of the village, including advance warning signs and anti-skid road surfacing on each approach. The scheme also includes high intensity lighting to increase visibility on the crossing.

Cllr Mark Cooney said the proposals would solve a number of traffic problems in the village. “The traffic calming measures, especially on the Tubberclair side, will be very helpful. The pedestrian crossing will act as a traffic calming measure itself, and will improve things for pedestrians,” he said.
