Firearms and ammunition have been seized by local Gardai as part of an ongoing Garda investigation into serious crime in the region.
Athlone Gardai carried out searches of four houses in the South Westmeath area last week, recovering quantities of firearms and ammunition, which were sent to Garda forensic labs for investigation, as well as two stolen vehicles.
Two people were arrested on Monday this week and questioned in Athlone Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act. They were released without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
The searches and arrests were part of a Garda investigation, ongoing since September, into serious crime in the region.
