Travelodge makes a second attempt at Athlone foothold

A plan has been submitted this week (March 1 ) to build a Travelodge motel closeto the Blyry industrial estate between the bypass and Ericssons, less than a year after a similar plan was refused.

Westmeath County Council took an application from Egan Mulready and Associates of Pearse Street, Athlone on behalf of developer Eamon Leahy to demolish an existing house and garage in the townland of Garrenkesh, opposite Dans Tavern, to build the four-storey, 41-bed motel. Access is planned from the existing roundabout.

According to the documents concerning the application last year for this development, the reason given for its refusal was because it was “an unintegrated development...[that] fell short of the design standards of the county development plan”.
