A heritage radio programme, a water quality project, and a survey of a monastic site are among the heritage projects in Westmeath that will benefit from the latest round of grants from the Heritage Council.
The 2010 revised Heritage Grant Schemes will provide funding to heritage projects in the county that support entrepreneurship, conservation, and engagement within the community.
Over 350 heritage projects nationwide will receive funding under the Heritage Council’s 2010 grants programme, to assist in the management, development and conservation of different aspects of our national heritage.
Examples of projects that will receive funding in Westmeath include ‘Heritage on your Doorstep’ by Athlone Community Radio, which is to produce and broadcast a series of six half-hour radio programmes covering all aspects of heritage. Through the use of technologies and community interaction, this project will raise awareness and foster appreciation of heritage at a local level across a broad spectrum of the community.
Other Westmeath beneficiaries include St Etchen’s Church, Killucan, where roof repairs will be carried out; a project by the Eastern River Basin District entitled ‘Importance of Water Quality’, aimed at secondary school students in 25 schools; and a geophysical survey to validate the existence of a monastic site at Clonarney Church/Graveyard by the Delvin Historical Society.
