Celebrate Green Learning Day!

A free ‘Springclean Westmeath!’ seminar is being organised by County Westmeath Tourism Ltd, and part one will take place in Belvedere House, Mullingar on Tuesday February 23 at 6.30pm.

‘Springclean Westmeath!’ is part of the Aontas National Adult Learners Festival which takes place throughout the last week in February. The theme for February 23 is Green Learning Day, which will be mirrored at the seminar. The theme of green learning will be continued at the follow-up seminar on Thursday March 11, which will have a very practical focus.

The seminars are open to everyone already involved in Tidy Towns and also to new people who might be interested in getting involved in an existing group or setting up their own. Come along to the ‘Springclean Westmeath!’ seminars to learn more about what financial support is available, and hear some expert advice and the stories of two National Tidy Towns Winners.

To celebrate Green Learning Day there will be plenty of ideas about how you can enjoy a greener lifestyle, and about forthcoming events and initiatives.

“Thirty-five small towns and villages and our two large urban centres of Athlone and Mullingar participated in the Tidy Towns Competition in 2009 which represents a good level of participation relative to other counties. The task is to support these groups in getting higher marks, encourage more people to get involved, and celebrate Green Learning Day to highlight the role adult learning can play in creating green citizens,” said Rhona Rogers, tourism development officer.

As examples of best practice, chairman of Ballinahown Development Association, PJ Hoey, will give a presentation on Tuesday February 23. Ballinahown Village was awarded a Bronze Medal in the 2009 national Tidy Towns competition and received first place in Westmeath for the fifth consecutive year.

Sharon Heffernan, chairperson of Emly Tidy Towns, the current national Tidy Towns winner, will also give a presentation on their journey to success and will include practical examples of energy saving and waste management projects.

Part one of the free ‘Springclean Westmeath!’ seminar will take place in Belvedere House, Mullingar on Tuesday February 23, with registration and light refreshments at 6.30pm
