Murrays of Ballinasloe celebrate 125 years in business

One-hundred-and twenty five years after it started John Murray Ltd of Ballinasloe is going from strength to strength.

Employing 10 people, the business specialises in selling animal feeds, fertilisers, general hardware, as well as being the largest wool merchants in the East Galway/South Roscommon area.

A firm fixture in Ballinasloe life, company managing director Joe Murray is the third generation of the family to run the business. “It’s funny to think that since we first opened our doors we have seen off the 1916 rebellion, the founding of the State and two world wars.”

In the 50 years that Joe Murray has been involved in the business he has seen massive changes in rural Ireland, and believes improved mechanisation and better analysis have revolutionised Irish farming. “There is no doubt that farming has become more difficult, but those who are left on the land are very committed and specialised in what they do,” he say.

Despite being affected by the recent floods, Joe Murray is very upbeat about the future. “It is true that if you live long enough, you will witness everything. While the floods were a big shock, I was taught never to look back in life. It has shown us the value of our neighbours and customers, and strengthened our resolve to continue the job of giving value for money and good friendly service.”
