Naughten presses Taoiseach on head shop legislation

Local TD Denis Naughten has once again raised the lack of action taken by the Government to ban the sale of dangerous chemicals in head shops.

Speaking in the Dáil this week, Denis Naughten pointed out to the Taoiseach that the decision made by the UK government to ban many of the head shop products before Christmas means this country will now be flooded with these toxic chemicals.

“Urgent action, which seems to be lacking on the part of the Health Minister, is now required to immediately extend the UK ban to Irish head shops before these chemicals are dumped in Ireland at knock down prices,” said Deputy Naughten.

“All that is required to ban these products is the signature of Mary Harney or Brian Cowen. At the stroke of a pen they can outlaw many of the products commonly sold in head shops overnight.”

In response to Denis Naughten, Taoiseach Brian Cowen said he wished to “acknowledge the work the Deputy has done” on the issue of head shops and pointed out that the Government is “currently preparing regulations which will introduce controls similar to those introduced in the UK”.
