Aisling Brennan from Ballinagore, Kilbeggan was on holidays in the Dominican Republic with her boyfriend John when the devastating earthquake hit neighbouring Haiti on Tuesday night.
Speaking of the event Ms Brennan said it was “so tragic what happened”.
“We felt the tremors at around 10pm Irish time. The walls started shaking, the bed was moving and the wardrobe doors flung open,” she explained.
Speaking to Midlands 103 Ms Brennan said that no one in the complex knew what was happening. “The tremor lasted about a minute. At first we thought it was a low flying plane...everyone came outside to see what was happening.”
“We were far enough away from the epicentre so no damage was done. We’re 100 miles north east of Haiti, so you can imagine if we felt it strongly here, the devastation in Haiti must have been catastrophic,” she added.
Haiti was struck by the major earthquake on Tuesday night. Buildings in the Capital of Port au Prince have been destroyed and thousands of people have been trapped underneath rubble or killed.
