Ireland West Airport Knock has been Ireland’s fastest growing international airport in recent years and is the only international airport located to serve the BMW region.
The airport services 11 scheduled destinations with flights to Alicante, Faro (new ), Bristol, Liverpool, East Midlands, Leeds Bradford (new ), Luton and Stansted with Ryanair, Gatwick with Aer Lingus, and Birmingham and Manchester with bmibaby.
Charter holiday flights are available to destinations such as Croatia with Concorde Travel, Faro with Panorama and Sunworld, and Lanzarote with Sunway.
Despite the difficult economic environment, 2009 was one of the most exciting years in the history of the airport as it continued to develop facilities and services with a number of highlights including:
- The implementation of a new Instrument Landing System. The major benefit of the new landing system has been to radically improve the airport’s reliability with aircraft now able to land in low cloud conditions, massively reducing by 98 per cent the possibility of diversions and putting the airport on a par with Cork, Shannon, Dublin, and other international airports.
- The integration of a new fully automated ‘real-time’ flight arrival and departure information system, which enables passengers and greeters to view same day travel updates for 20+ flight destinations, both in the terminal and online at www.irelandwestairport.com
October 2009 also saw the airport celebrate the opening of its brand new terminal which provides the capability for the airport to handle 1.5 million passengers. The new terminal is designed to expand, improve, and modernise Ireland West Airport for passengers travelling in the 21st century.
Managing director Ireland West Knock, Joe Gilmore, commented “Despite the tough economic conditions, more than 600,000 passengers used the airport in 2009 which is almost on a par with 2008 figures. This is a huge vote of confidence in Ireland West Knock as a key access point to the UK and Europe for people in the West, North West and Midlands regions of Ireland, and further strengthens our position as the low cost, convenient alternative to larger congested airports.”
