As we head out of the noughties and into 2010, what will be the hot trends for the coming year and beyond? Looking at all aspects of how we live our lives, M&S experts predict what we’ll be doing, buying, eating, and even smelling in 2010.
Wearing
“In womenswear suede will be the new leather in 2010 so make sure you buy something statement in suede. This works across all ages and is a really accessible trend for all. For more directional fashion looks, think underwear as outerwear as lingerie and corsetry references filter from the catwalk and into the mainstream. Also, don’t forget the jumpsuit which gets all grown up in 2010. Updated with a flowing, draped silhouette, it has a more discerning and sophisticated look.”
Neil Hendy, head of design, Womenswear
“For men, 2010 is about colour and confidence. Men will be experimenting with new colour combinations and be bolder in their style choices. Watch out for coloured leather shoes, densely patterned shirts and formal jackets in bold pastel hues. The city short will also emerge as a menswear must have, worn slim and smart, they are every stylish man’s must have for 2010.”

In the home
“2010 is the year of the kitchen. Traditionally the heart of the home, the kitchen is a comforting place to spend time with family and friends and this year, as we look to surround ourselves with things we love, the kitchen is going to be the new black. Make sure you have a great table which will give the room a focal point as well as having some statement glassware and china to make everyday dining special.”

Food and drink
“Atkins is out as high protein with balanced carbs is set to become the dieting mantra for 2010. In a first to market, we’re launching ‘Simply Fuller Longer’ – a complete range based on scientific research that shows diets higher in protein help you control hunger and produce more effective weight loss results. Losing weight should be simple, you need to eat fewer calories than you use, but as we all know it’s not that easy in practice – a lot of diets fail as people feel hungry or deprived, so quickly give up and go back to their old habits. Unlike other high protein diets, carbohydrates are not excluded from the M&S plan, and customers are also encouraged to eat extra vegetables and fruit if they do feel in need of a snack.”
Claire Hughes, M&S nutritionist
“Drink-wise, 2010 is all about beers for girls. Women enjoying beer is already on the rise; a recent survey carried out by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale ) has revealed that 30 per cent of women have tried and enjoyed real ale, compared to 16 per cent in 2008. With this in mind, we developed a brand new range of beers and ciders to suit a more feminine palate, and are delighted to see the collection quickly gaining popularity.”

Fragrance
“2010 is all about surrounding yourself with fragrance. Think scented candles, fine room mists, delicious body lotions and frothy bath creams as well as perfume worn in the traditional way. Classic fragrances such as rose and lavender will be particular favourites, these familiar scents evoke memories of childhood, making us feel safe and reassured.”
