Dog-eared document saves speeder

A bus driver caught speeding outside Athlone managed to beat his summons in the District Court this week (December 2 ) after he showed the judge the state the official document arrived in through his letterbox.

“Have you got a dog?” Judge John Neilan asked of Mr Oliver Kennedy (60 ), of Coolderry, Birr, Co Offaly, as he held up and inspected the dog-eared document and envelope that looked like it had been cut in a V-shape.

“No, judge. That’s how it came,’ said Kennedy.

“They sealed it up like that in the post office.”

“Can you imagine if that was your Prize Bonds and that was the state of your cheque?” mused the judge before getting back to the business at hand.

“I must remind you to slow down if you are in a bus,” he said, before dismissing the summons.

Earlier, the court had heard from Garda Keith Harrison how Kennedy had been clocked at 69 Km/h in a special 50 Km/h zone through the roadworks at Summerhill on April 15.
