Naughten welcomes postponement of local industrial action in light of flooding crisis

An announcement this week (November 23 ) by public service unions in Roscommon that they are to postpone their national day of action to assist with the flooding crisis has been welcomed by local Fine Gael TD, Denis Naughten.

They were supported by their colleagues in similarly beleaguered Leitrim and it followed similar pledges from members of SIPTU, IMPACT, and the TEEU in counties Cork, Galway, and Clare which have all been badly hit by flooding.

“Over the last number of days I have visited a number of areas affected by the flooding to see the damage first hand and I have spoken with householders and businesses of damaged properties,” said Deputy Naughten.

“I have also witnessed the tremendous work done by local authority staff, volunteers and the emergency services and would like to commend them for taking the decision to postpone strike action to allow them to continue their role over the coming days and to focus on flood clean-up operations and the protection of property against further damage.

“My sincere sympathies are with all those who have been seriously affected across the constituency and across the country by the appalling floods. I also want to compliment local authority staff, the Gardai, army and emergency services, including local sub aqua clubs, for their Trojan work in assisting those most affected by this flooding.”

Also, nursing unions agreed to exclude Portiuncula hospital in Ballinasloe from industrial action.
