Local Fine Gael councillor, Alan Shaw, is furious about the level of litter being allowed to build up on the dual carriageway in Athlone.
“It is simply unacceptable that the primary route is being neglected in this way. The IBAL (Irish Business Against Litter ) report issued earlier this year highlighted Athlone as a litter blackspot and while many aspects of the report have been challenged as inaccurate, it is clear that Athlone will not improve its position unless the dual carriageway receives a major clean-up.
“The extent of litter visible by drivers on the dual-carriageway is simply a disgrace,” said Cllr Shaw, who intends to raise the matter at the next Athlone Town Council meeting if the situation has not improved.
