A unique opportunity to see two of the country’s up and coming bands in action presents itself this weekend in Mullingar. This Saturday, September 20, The Stables hosts a double header with The Gandhis and The Urges live on stage.
The Gandhis have been developing their own unique style of pop quirkiness from their Lucan base since forming in 2004. Inspired by their shared love of all things pop, from The Beatles to the Buzzcocks, James Brown to Roy Orbison, The Clash to The Coral, they have created a sound both familiar and original. The Lucan boys cut their teeth on the live circuit, playing support to acts like Electric Six, The Levellers, and Hugo Race, as well as home-grown talents Republic of Loose, Paddy Casey, Mundy, Declan O'Rourke, Fight Like Apes, and Crayonsmith.
Last autumn the band teamed up with producer Andrew Knightly to record their debut single ‘Zaza’, which reached number one on the downloadmusic.ie chart and the newsceneradio chart. They are currently working in studio with Colm Quearney, and plan to release their next single this September.
Born out of suburban frustration The Urges started out in a damp Dublin garage, also in 2004. With little or no musical knowledge they set out to write nothing but raw stripped down rock 'n' roll. Since then they have enjoyed the success of their debut single “(Around & ) Around Again” which topped the Irish charts in summer 2005, and have played alongside big named bands such as The Zutons, The La's, Wild Billy Childish, Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene, The Buzzcocks, Babyshambles, and Kulashaker.
The Urges have spent the last two years playing festivals throughout Europe including Oxygen and the notorious Primitive Festival in Rotterdam, Holland as well as being invited to play Cavestomp in New York alongside such legends as The Sonics, The Alarm Clocks, Strawberry Alarm Clock, and The Lyres. Their sound can be traced as far back as the mid 60s where primal fuzztone and psychedelic organ kicked off real rock 'n' roll - all the way up to the present day where indie garage rock could not be a more domineering musical force.
When it comes to live shows, The Urges effortlessly drift in and out of different timings and melodies, nonetheless maintaining an authentic yet primitive sound which always leaves the crowd crying for more. Having spent the last two years honing their sound The Urges have managed to capture this on their debut album Psych Ward.
Catch The Gandhis, The Urges, and guests in The Stables, Mullingar this Saturday September 20 from 10pm.
