Bail granted in Bonavalley case

A man charged with an assault of a woman at the Bonavalley bridge on the night of August 24 had his case adjourned until October 7 at the District Court this week (September 23 ) in order to arrange a Russian translator for his defence.

Before Judge John Neilan was Denniss Prokopovs (24 ), a Latvian national with an address at Irishtown Centre, Golden Island, Athlone, on a single assault charge.

The alleged incident occurred shortly after midnight on the night in question close to the Bonavalley railway bridge and prompted a minor media frenzy on account of its resemblance to a number of similar incidents in the vicinity in 2007 and 2008.

Allegedly, Prokopovs stopped his car near the bridge, got out, and made a “suspicious approach” to one of three women before driving off.

Prokopovs made no reply to the formal charge when it was put to him.

His solicitor, Mr Padraig Quinn, said he wouldn’t be applying for legal aid.

Prokopovs was bailed for the two weeks after Judge John Neilan heard from Superintendent Aidan Glacken that he had “no concerns at this stage” about the welfare of the injured party.

The judge ordered him to have no contact with the injured party.
