Council to hold home composting workshops

Home composting workshops, organised by Westmeath County Council, are to be held in Athlone and Mullingar in the coming weeks.

There has never been a better time to begin home composting. It’s easy to begin, and all you need is a compost heap or bin.

Home composting can reduce the waste in your refuse bin by one third, reduces the amount of waste going to landfill, saves you money in waste disposal charges, and is a convenient and inexpensive way to handle your organic waste. It is also an easy way to cheaply return nutrients to the soil and improve soil structure.

If you would like to compost but don’t know how to start, or are already composting and would like to develop your expertise, Westmeath County Council is organising two free composting workshops on Thursday September 17 at 7pm in the Arts Centre, Mullingar; and on Saturday September 19 at 10.30am in Athlone Civic Centre, Athlone.

Experts from the Irish Peatland Conservation Council will show you how to recycle organic waste from your home to make compost.

Places must be pre-booked and will be allocated on a first come - first served basis. To book your place, contact Bernie Ginnell, environmental awareness officer, Westmeath County Council, at (044 ) 9332125 or (044 ) 9332226, or email [email protected].

Westmeath County Council offers home composters for sale at €40 from Mullingar Civic Amenity, Recycling Centre, Zone C, Mullingar Business Park, tel (044 ) 9344155; and at Athlone Civic Amenity, Golden Island, Athlone, tel (090 ) 6477397.
