Step into the past at Corlea Heritage Week

A veritable pick and mix of events await the general public at Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre in Kenagh, Longford as part of National Heritage Week celebrations. The centre which houses the largest Iron Age timber trackway in Europe has events to suit all ages and interests.

For children, Dig and Discover and Natural World are workshops dealing with archaeology and environment respectively, running from Monday August 24 to Wednesday August 26. The Corlea guides will be taking to the bog on a Flying Colours Nature Walk in search of butterflies, moths, and dragonflies on Saturday August 22 at 3pm. Dr Christopher Read will be explaining all about Weapons From The Past on Saturday August 29 at 3pm and there will also be a chance to handle a longbow or a Viking sword on the day.

Your Man's Puppets perform Billy Goats Gruff Show on Sunday August 30, which tells the story of a little goat who goes on a big adventure and gets in to lots of trouble.

The Bog Bodies Research Project is the gruesome subject of a very fascinating and graphic talk by Isabella Mulhall from the National Museum of Ireland on Sunday August 23 at 3pm. This is strictly one for the adults. Kenagh Times Past takes centre stage on Tuesday August 25 at 8pm with a lively evening of music, chat, song, and recollection with a special feature on Kenagh GAA, while Kenagh Through the Lens is a photographic exhibition running for the duration of Heritage Week .

What is the future for our canals and bogs? Wetlands and Waterways explores the various options with speakers Eanna Rowe, Waterways Ireland and Marie McCormack, Failte Ireland, on Wednesday August 26 at 8pm. Longford and The American Civil War highlights the Longford connection in song and story with author and broadcaster Aidan OHara on Friday August 28 at 8pm. Booking is advised for all talks.
