Educating Westmeath women on cervical cancer prevention

Hibernian Aviva Health, the first health insurer to cover the Cervical Cancer Vaccine (CCV ), has launched a cervical cancer education and prevention campaign in partnership with specialist nursing provider Point of Care.

The Westmeath seminar takes place in St Francis Private Hospital, Mullingar on Tuesday August 11, and will be followed by a series of cervical cancer education and prevention seminars taking place over the summer months.

The cervical cancer education and prevention seminar in Mullingar will provide information on what cervical cancer is and how to prevent it. The seminars are specifically designed to appeal to mums with daughters over the age of 12 and it is hoped that the campaign will result in up to 1,000 young women in Ireland getting vaccinated against this preventable cancer.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women under 45 and with vaccination and screening it is preventable. Research shows that up to 80 per cent of women will come into contact with the virus that can cause cervical cancer, and in Ireland every year approximately 180 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed. Over one million women globally have already been vaccinated against the disease and it is estimated that over 300,000 women across Ireland who could be at risk of cervical cancer should seek vaccination.

Speaking about the cervical cancer vaccine, Bernadette Carter, Point of Care cancer specialist nurse and key speaker at the cervical cancer seminars, said: “The vaccine offers a 99 per cent success rate against the two types of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV ), which are responsible for 70 per cent of cases of cervical cancer.

“It is recommended to young girls of age 12 years and upwards because it is best administered before they become sexually active to be most effective. The vaccine really gives women the chance to protect themselves from cervical cancer and take control of their health.”

The Hibernian Aviva and Point of Care cervical cancer education and prevention seminar takes place at St Francis Private Hospital, Mullingar, on Tuesday August 11, at 6pm. Places are limited, so book your place now at www.hibernianavivahealth.ie
