Deputy Denis Naughten says that the opening of the new section of motorway between Athlone and Ballinasloe will dramatically improve safety on the old road, which services many populated communities in South Roscommon.
“There is no community or family residing along the old N6 between Athlone and Ballinasloe which has not been impacted upon by an accident or fatality over the years,” said Deputy Naughten.
“The opening of the new motorway will now see the volumes of traffic reduce dramatically on the old road, especially at weekends, when it was nearly impossible to cross that road.
“It should also be pointed out that the original plan was to widen the existing road to a dual carriageway rather than construct a new road, which would have made a death trap of the road between the two towns. It was only after the direct intervention of then Transport Minister, the late Seamus Brennan TD, that this plan was changed, and a new road approved.”
He added: “As the person who brought this issue directly to Minister Brennan at that time, I want to acknowledge his decisiveness in ensuring that the original plans were shelved.
“While the new road will have an impact on local businesses, it is hoped that with a relaxation of planning rules we can see these businesses develop and prosper into the future.”
