People from Athlone and throughout County Westmeath are invited to grab a pencil and paper and join with Luan Gallery and the National Gallery of Ireland on National Drawing Day, Saturday, May 18.
Now in its 20th year, the annual event will see the gallery joined by over 70 arts centres, galleries, museums and libraries across the country to celebrate drawing.
In celebration of National Drawing Day, Luan Gallery will host a variety of drawing activities suitable for all ages. Drop into Luan Gallery from 11am-5pm to try your hand at sketching, whether it be a quick doodle or a detailed drawing, in your own time, at your own pace!
Take part in the Self-Directed Drawing Tour of Luan Gallery’s current exhibition Apocalypse Anxieties. Visitors are invited to take part in this self-directed drawing tour of our current exhibition Apocalypse Anxieties. Drawing materials and worksheets will be available at Luan Gallery reception to engage participants in fast-response drawing exercises to the artwork, with creative prompts to help guide them in their idea generation. This is suitable for ages 8 + and all materials will be provided.
Visitors can also make their mark on the Gallery in the large-scale, collaborative drawing “Athlone’s Window to the Future” on the windows of the boardwalk gallery at Luan Gallery! Visitors are invited to imagine the town of Athlone 100 years in the future and draw their vision of what that view from the window might look like. Whether it be a quick doodle or a detailed drawing. This is suitable for all ages and all materials will be provided.
Apocalypse Anxieties is a multi-disciplinary group show featuring work by Aideen Barry, Kerry Guinan, Léann Herlihy, Tom O’Dea, Orla Punch, Christopher Steenson and Frank Sweeney and is guest curated by Kerry Guinan.
Apocalypse Anxieties — an exhibition at the end of the world — responds conceptually, aesthetically, and affectively to an underground “nuclear bunker” installed under Custume Barracks during the Cold War. In this exhibition, the unused bunker symbolises the apocalyptic prospects that have shadowed the modern era and its unfettered productive ambitions.
