Buccaneers RFC has announced a sponsorship partnership with the award-winning childcare provider Grovelands Childcare Plus in which Buccs Minis will be recognised as the Grovelands Minis Academy. This alliance will commence at the start of the new season for a period of three years.
At the sponsorship launch, Ronan Bushell, director of Grovelands Childcare Plus, stated that this partnership is an ideal fit for both parties. With an involvement over many decades with the club, Ronan is proud and pleased to support Buccaneers particularly at Minis level. Club President Brendan Wilkins thanked Grovelands and the Bushell family for their generous patronage and he looked forward to it being a successful alliance for both parties.
Grovelands Childcare Plus has won multiple awards at national level for the quality of learning and care they provide. Established 30 years ago, they now employ over 100 expert educators at their 6 locations in Athlone, Mullingar and Tullamore.
Three Buccs on Connacht team
Three Buccaneers players featured on the Connacht Junior team that played Leinster last weekend. Venerable prop Martin Staunton again captained the side in which centre Ross Murphy-Sweeney was promoted from the bench while young Sam Fogarty debuted at lock. Connacht complete the interpro series away to Munster at Old Christians on Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm.
Awards event postponed
As a mark of respect due to the untimely passing of Conal Sheeran, Buccaneers Rugby Football Club’s Awards event was postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.
Tag Rugby Summer League
Buccaneers Laya Tag Rugby Summer League commences today, Thursday, May 9 and continues until mid-July. Tag rugby is a fun and fast-moving non-contact variation of the game, suitable for all ability and experience levels. It is an ideal sport to keep fit in a social way. Squads can be up to 15 players, which makes the cost for individuals very reasonable. Teams are made up of seven players, three of whom must be female. Buccs summer camp
Buccaneers Rugby Summer Camp will take place from August 12 to 16 from 9.30am to 12 noon daily. Learn to play rugby in a fun, safe environment. Free club boot bag and hat. €70 for first child; €50 for additional children. Book early to ensure your place by contacting Geraldine at 086 1732711.
Condolences
Heartfelt condolences are extended to Conal Sheeran’s parents Frank and Imelda, sister Rebecca, grandmother Bessie and all the wider family and friends on Conal’s untimely passing. May the Lord grant eternal rest to Conal.
Deepest sympathy is also extended to Deirdre Shine and the Shine and Carty families on the death of Elizabeth Shine. May she rest in eternal peace.
Tiernan O’Halloran retiring
Tiernan O’Halloran is retiring from professional rugby at the end of this season. Primarily a fullback, he has made 236 appearances for Connacht, scoring 48 tries in the process one of which was the opening try in the province’s 2016 Guinness PRO12 final triumph over Leinster. Connacht Player of the Year 2017, Tiernan won six Ireland senior caps, scoring two tries. He also represented Ireland U-20s and Emerging Ireland. The Clifden native, whose dad Aidan hails from Moate, began his rugby with Connemara and played with distinction for Buccaneers for a number of seasons. Congrats, Tiernan, on a memorable and lengthy career.
Annual general meeting
Note that the Annual General Meeting of Buccaneers Rugby Football Club will take place in The Bounty on Friday, May 24, at 7.30pm. Only paid-up members may vote.
‘Give It A Try’ for girls

Race night winner
