Athlone-Moate Municipal District will host an address of recognition for seven religious orders who have made a significant contribution to education in Athlone and its hinterland on Wednesday, April 24.
The date for the civic address of recognition was officially confirmed during the most recent sitting of the Municipal District, the formalities due to commence in the Athlone Civic Centre at 5pm.
The religious orders being to be recognised on April 24 are the Marist Brothers Order, Athlone, La Sainte Union Sisters (Bower ), the Mercy Sisters, Athlone, the Mercy Sisters, Moate, Carmelite Order, Moate, Athlone Mixed National School (Church of Ireland ) and Sisters of Mercy, Kilbeggan.
A motion to recognise the religious orders contribution to education within the community was raised by Cllr Frankie Keena who initially suggested that the Municipal District honour the contribution made by three religious orders, namely the Marist Brothers, La Sainte Union Sisters and the Mercy Sisters to the education and development of Athlone during the course of the previous 130 years.
His motion was supported by Cllr Liam McDaniel, Cathaoirleach, Westmeath County Council, who noted that the religious orders in Moate and Kilbeggan should also be recognised for their respective contributions to education in the two towns.
The full list of religious orders was approved at a meeting of Westmeath County Council after it was referred to the council’s Corporate Policy Group (CPG ) following last month’s meeting of Athlone Moate Municipal District.
