Chambers identifies Westmeath as key player in Ireland’s bid for European energy leadership

Senator Lisa Chambers, who will contest for a seat in the Midlands-North West constituency in the forthcoming European elections, has identified Westmeath as a central figure in the campaign to secure the European Energy Commissioner post for Ireland.

Her strategic vision underscores the county’s potential in contributing to and benefiting from this pivotal role.

The call has been backed by Longford-Westmeath constituency Fianna Fáil Deputies Robert Troy and Joe Flaherty and Senator Paul Daly, who said such an appointment would be a major development for Ireland.

While the selection of Ireland’s next European Commissioner remains the prerogative of the Government, there is certainly an expectation within Fianna Fáil that the next EU Commissioner for Ireland will be a Fianna Fáil nominee, based on the rotation of such roles within government and factoring in each Party’s respective parliamentary party sizes.

This would also be another significant step in realising the potential off the west coach for wind energy and in turn, would mean high quality jobs being created.

In a detailed appeal to coalition Government leaders, Chambers emphasized the unique position of Westmeath to aid in achieving Europe’s energy independence through its renewable resources and innovative projects.

“Westmeath stands at the cusp of leading Ireland’s renewable energy charge, showcasing our commitment to sustainable development and economic growth.

“This initiative is not just about steering Europe away from its current energy dependencies but also about fostering local development and creating high-quality jobs within Westmeath,” Senator Chambers said.

Chambers also proposed hosting a global energy conference in Ireland, potentially spotlighting Westmeath and its contributions to the green energy sector.

In a separate letter to Fianna Fáil members, Senator Chambers has also underlined her commitment to addressing critical issues that can make a real difference to the lives of the Irish people.
