Athlone Community College students were recently presented with an award to mark their achievement of winning the secondary school category at the 2023 Arcadia Creative Climate Awards.
An initiative of Arcadia Retail Park, hosted annually in conjunction with Cllr Frankie Keena's 'Junior Mayor' programme, students from Athlone and the immediate Midlands region are encouraged to complete in-depth projects with a core focus on making a positive impact to the environment as we look towards the future.
Those in attendance for the award presentation ceremony in Athlone Community College were former Student Council president Sam Brooks, last year's Junior Mayor and project leader Nikki Campbell, Junior Mayor Ryan Dolan, Student Council president Fionnan Mulvey, Arcadia Retail Park director Fiachra McLoughlin, Cllr Keena and Athlone Community College principal, Ms Eileen Donohoe.
In his presentation address Cllr Keena noted the increasing popularity of the 'Junior Mayor' programme.
''It is fantastic to see the 'Junior Mayor' programme continuing to grow with increasing numbers of schools participating.
"I want to congratulate the great team at Athlone Community College who were the overall winners of the 2023 Arcadia Climate Awards competition in the post primary school category.
"Special thanks also to Fiachra McLoughlin, from Arcadia Retail Park, for the generous sponsorship of these awards," Cllr Keena concluded.
All of the participating schools are presently actively working on their 2024 Climate Awards project, with the entries set to go on public display in TUS in late April.
