A memorial walk in honour of former Athlone Fine Gael politician Nicky McFadden will take place on East Saturday morning (March 30 ).

Commencing on the Canal Walk Ferbane and concluding in Shannon Harbour, the memorial walk marks the 10th anniversary of the former elected representative’s passing, funds raised from the initiative being afforded to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The incessant rainfall has resulted in a route change for the memorial walk, a bus pick up service now being provided on Saturday at 9.40am from Athlone GAA on the Ballymahon Road.

Upon the conclusion of the memorial walk, refreshments will be served in McIntyres, Shannon Harbour, prior to the departure of the bus for Athlone at 2.15pm. There is a charge of €10 per person for use of the bus.

Nicky served as a Fine Gael councillor and Senator prior to being elected to Dáil Éireann in the Longford/Westmeath constituency in 2011.

She served as an elected representative up to the time of her death from Motor Neurone Disease, at the age of 51, on March 25, 2014.

Speaking this week on the anniversary of her death, newly elected leader of Fine Gael, Simon Harris, stated that he was remembering the courageous Nicky McFadden on her 10th anniversary.

“Nicky was a friend, a colleague, and a committed public servant and she is as missed today as ever,” Minister Harris said.
