CIPD Midland Region host successful local networking breakfast event

The Midlands Region of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD ), in conjunction with Collins McNicholas Recruitment and HR Services Group, recently hosted their ‘Annual Employment Law Update’ at a breakfast event.

This is the second talk in an exciting programme of events for 2023/2024 provided by the CIPD Midlands Region committee.

Following a networking opportunity for attendees, there was an introduction from Caroline Macklin, Vice Chairperson of the CIPD Midlands Committee who then introduced Mary Mullin Regional Manager in CMCN and the key speakers, Alastair Purdy, Don McGann, Siobhan McGann and Robin Hyde from Alastair Purdy & Co Solicitors.

Mary Mullin, Regional Manager of CMCN, welcomed all in attendance and spoke about the current Recruitment and Human Resources landscape and trends in the Midlands region.

The Collins McNicholas Employment Law event has grown in capacity each year and is heavily attended by HR practitioners, general and plant managers, team leaders and supervisors from a range of sectors. Collins McNicholas, in conjunction with CIPD, will be hosting Employment Law events nationwide in the coming months.

The Employment Law update focused on a number of key areas including, key Employment Trends for 2023, Case Law Update, Legislation Update and Data Trends in WRC (Work Place Relations Commission ) Decision Making.

Alastair Purdy began by highlighted a number of recent amendments in legislation for practitioners to be aware of and outlined some key employment trends from 2023. Alastair discussed the changes to the Irish Employment Permits System, which came into force on January 17, 2024. In addition, he discussed employee’s right to request remote or flexible working which is expected to come into effect in the coming weeks.

Don McGann gave an update on Case Law from 2023 and discussed a number of key cases and decisions. Following this, Siobhan McGann gave attendees an update on Legislation for 2024.

In addition, Robin Hyde highlighted Data Trends in decision making within the WRC (Work Place Relations Commission ), including the number of cases heard and decisions made each year.

Attendees were provided with insights on how these changes in employment law would impact employers and were given advice on how they could be managed in a practical and efficient manner.

The talk concluded with an interactive Q&A segment from the floor with many of the attendees asking questions to the four speakers on current Employment Law topics.
