The ‘Farmers of Ballydangan Bog’ community will host an education event in the South Roscommon townland to mark World Wetlands Day on Friday (February 2 ).
Taking place from 2pm-4pm, those attending the event will hear from local farmers and community groups protecting nature in the area. These include the FarmPEAT Project, the Ballydangan Bog Red Grouse Project, and the Uí Máine Kingdom Project who are highlighting the uniqueness of the karst landscape in South Roscommon.
FarmPEAT (Farm Payments for Ecological and Agricultural Transitions ) project centres on developing a locally-led, innovative, results-based farm scheme for farmers who manage lands that surround some of Ireland’s finest remaining raised bogs.
Working with local farmers in Roscommon and the Midlands counties of Westmeath and Offaly, the project is designing and trialing a programme especially adapted to the local landscape that will incentivise the delivery of enhanced environmental outcomes.
As you spend time on the bog, you will learn about farming with peat soils, red grouse conservation, the lowland karst landscape and the sharing of folklore through art.
This is an education opportunity during which you will learn about the area’s landscape and build new community connections. All are welcome, farmers especially!
Admission is free, but you do need to book your place via the Eventbrite website.
