A Sinn Féin candidate in the Roscommon Athlone LEA is encouraging Monksland residents to make a submission to a joint urban area plan and help determine the future for the ever evolving townland.
Working in tandem, both Westmeath County Council and Roscommon County Council have launched the public consultation of the Pre-Draft ‘Strategic Issues Paper’ for the Athlone Joint Urban Area Plan 2024-2030, local election aspirant, Joe Harney, noting the importance of all relevant submissions to ensure the success of the initiative.
“I strongly urge every resident of South Roscommon to actively participate in this crucial process by making a submission by 5pm on Thursday, February 1. It is absolutely essential that all residents take the time to contribute to ensure the success of this initiative. Your co-operation and engagement in this matter are greatly appreciated,” Mr Harney stated.
Under numerous headings, the Sinn Féin candidate, notes the benefits to residents of living in Monksland, encouraging the future growth of the townland to be positively impacted by submissions to the joint urban area plan.

Delving into the demographic fabric, the survey conducted from April 2017 to October 2018 reveals a community predominantly composed of working-age individuals, with 66% aged between 26 and 45. Noteworthy is the housing landscape, where 58% of respondents are renters, underlining the need to address concerns such as affordability and tenure security in the upcoming urban action plan.
Community Pulse: A Symphony of Satisfaction and Challenges
Monksland residents take pride in their community, with an overwhelming 93% expressing enjoyment in living here. However, the survey illuminates’ areas for improvement – only 47% find satisfaction in community activities, and 39% in community facilities. Uniting against challenges, the call for enhanced awareness and opportunities echoes through the report.
Education, Employment, and Youth Dynamics
Boasting a well-educated population, Monksland faces a call to action for the 25% unemployed. Despite high connectivity (97% with computers and 99% with internet access ), there’s a surprising lack of awareness about available education and training options. The report also emphasises the need for accessible and well-publicised community activities for youth.

Residents are not just identifying challenges, they’re offering solutions. The following recommendations, put forward by the residents of Monksland, stand as a testament to their commitment to strengthening the townland.
Pertaining to matters community recreation, recommendations relayed request the development of a community green area featuring football pitches, astroturf and running track, skateboard rink, walking track and benches.
Residents have also voiced their desire to see the realisation of drop-in centres, drama spaces, a modern community centre, social clubs, childcare services and music facilities as part of the future development of Monksland.
