Local Fine Gael councillor John Dolan has this week called for the provision of further Garda resources amid a spate of recent burglaries in local rural communities.
"I am aware of quite a number of robberies in the last couple of weeks in my rural locality and beyond which were committed in the early afternoon and evening. There are a couple of text alert groups in the area, but some robberies did not get registered with the Garda system and really for information about a threat in the area the speed of getting the text alert out to the public has to improve from the Garda side.
"I have spoken with a number of recent victims of robberies and they have not got any great confidence that their property will be recovered or anyone prosecuted for the crime. People were told that it was most likely a Dublin gang that committed these crimes. I ask how they know this and what are they doing to apprehend these people.
"I understand that it is very difficult for the Gardai to be at numerous locations when required, but I think that it is not acceptable that these robbers can roam rural Ireland breaking into homes knowing that they are very unlikely to be ever caught.
"In my view there has to be some local knowledge for gangs to be able to travel vast distances and break into houses in the area. It is important that we support the Gardai and help solve these crimes," Cllr Dolan stated.
