AGM

A well attended AGM took place recently during which a very successful 2023 was reviewed. Pride of place went to the Under 17 team who completed a championship and league double. Great tributes were paid to all involved with the club’s camogie teams who completed their first year of competitions. Hurling finals were reached at Under 13, 15 and 19 levels but all sides lost out on the day. The great progress of the Intermediate side was also reviewed and the retention of their Division Two league status bodes well for both league and championship for 2024.

The hugely successful Festival Week, to celebrate the club’s 50th anniversary, was the highlight of the year. This included various social and cultural events and the hosting of three camogie and six hurling tournaments. Other events included a family fun day, a road hurling competition, a juvenile talent show, hurling and camogie long poc competitions and a social golf outing. It culminated with a gala dinner dance at which the GAA President Larry McCarthy was the special guest.

Under 19 Division 2 Final

St Oliver Plunkett’s 2-16 Southern Gaels 1-10

Played in Moate on Sunday the Athlone side came up against an outstanding Mullingar side and had to give second best on the day. With ten minutes remaining there were just three points separating the side but a strong finish saw Plunkett’s take the honours.

Gaels started positively with a goal from a free by Cian Geary within a minute of the throw-in. However, the Mullingar side controlled much of the second quarter scoring 1-6 in the process. Gaels did manage three points shortly before the break but still went in at half-time 1-11 to 1-5 adrift.

They began the second half in style as they had two Geary pointed frees and one from Ruairí Ó Duibhir from play. Mullingar pulled back a point but Gaels added two more to give themselves a real chance of an upset. However, Plunketts finished in style to emerge worthy winners.
