AkiDwA, a national Network of Migrant women and charity organisation, supports migrant women living in Ireland in the areas of health, integration and sexual, domestic and gender-based violence, among others.
In February of this year, AkiDwA hosted a health and wellness fair in Dublin, which was a huge success with a great attendance of service users. There was much positive feedback and ladies were happy to have accessed health services on the day.
The aim is to extend this service nationwide and to that end, AkiDwa are hosting a free health fair in Athlone, to reach service users in the Midlands region. The fair will be hosted at St Kieran’s Community Centre Athlone, on Friday, November 24, from 11am to 4pm.
AkiDwA has engaged local partners and service users in the Midlands and conducted a needs assessment which highlighted a high demand for health screening and information services.
This fair brings together different national and local frontline partners to provide free health services and information on the day. These include Safety Net Primary Care, Marie Keating, Irish Cancer Society, Black therapist Ireland, Sanctuary runners, LARRC-Cancer support Hub, CUIDIU, Irish Cancer Society, Offaly Domestic Violence Service (ODVSS ), Athlone Woman’s Refuge (ESKER HOUSE ), Midlands regional Drug& Alcohol Task Force, GAA and New Horizon, among others.
This fair will be an incredible opportunity for the local community, including migrant women in the Midlands to access free health services, including speaking to medical practitioners and counsellors. There will be health screening, physical health, mental and psychosocial health, nutrition and social wellbeing, with some thing for every one! Lunch and refreshments will be provided, so no need to worry about hunger.
