By Lilly Daly, Leah Winters and Millie O’Donovan
We attended the Ericsson Innovation and Technology Day in Athlone on Thursday, October 5, our group consisting of Lilly Daly, Leah Winters and Millie O’ Donavan.
We presented our project from the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition to many Ericsson employees.
Our project, for which we won second place in the Junior Biology Category, is entitled ‘Bio Enzymes: A Cooler Way to Wash’. Our aim was to produce a pre-wash clothing soak from fruit waste. The soak digested food-based stains limiting the need for high temperature cycles and reducing energy bills. We fermented the fruit peels and transformed them into enzyme beads.
Our experience at the Ericsson Technology Day will stay with us forever. We got the opportunity to meet and talk to the employees at the Ericsson Software Campus. Visitors to our stand were very interested in hearing about our project. We were fascinated by the many projects that Ericsson is developing. Our participation in this event was truly amazing. Thank you to Ms Margaret Mandal (MCS ) and Sinead O’Reilly who facilitated with this event.

AMD tech expert engages TY students
Transition Year students had the opportunity in recent times to learn from Alex Dowling, a representative from AMD, a prominent tech company. Alex’s presentation was informative and insightful, providing students with valuable insights into the working world.
AMD is a leading technology company known for designing and manufacturing high-performance computer processors and graphics cards. During her visit, she discussed various aspects of the tech industry, including the variety of carers and opportunities it entails. Alex’s real-world experiences at AMD made these topics very relatable for the students.
The students left the presentation not only with a deeper understanding of the tech industry but also with a newfound enthusiasm to explore the limitless potential of computer science, giving them better understanding of the practical applications of technology.
