Simon Communities unite to ‘Put Homelessness on the Run’

Midlands Simon Community is delighted to announce a joint fundraising event in conjunction with the Simon Communities in Galway and the Mid West. The first ever Women’s Mini Marathon Galway takes place in Galway on Sunday June 28 and is a fantastic opportunity for women to show solidarity with those on the margins of our society, and to ‘Put Homelessness on the Run’.

The event will start at 11.30am and goes from South Park at The Claddagh, Galway city. It provides a great opportunity for all those taking part to enjoy the fun and fitness benefits of a mini-marathon without having to travel too far. It is also ideal for anyone who was unable to make it to the national event in Dublin recently or anyone who simply wants another chance to experience all the craic that goes with this type of event.

We are urging anyone who can run, walk, or jog (you can even crawl we don’t mind! ) to take part on the day and help to raise much needed funds which will go directly to your local Simon Community. So any and all funds raised in Westmeath will stay in Westmeath. Between the work of the Galway, Mid West, and Midlands Simon Communities, vital services are being provided to people who are experiencing homelessness, and at risk of homelessness in over 10 counties.

Angela Killion, project leader for Emergency Services with the Midlands Simon Community, said “We are using this fantastic event to highlight homelessness, but also to highlight it as an issue that affects women. There is sometimes a perception that homelessness only affects single men. This is simply not the case. Over a third of all our cases are either single women, of all ages, or women with children and families. This is a wonderful opportunity for women from all over the Midlands and beyond to show solidarity with all those experiencing homelessness, but especially women in the region.

“Given the extremely difficult climate we are all now experiencing, this is also a great opportunity for Midlands Simon to raise some much needed funds. We are dependent now more than ever on the help and support of the wider community to fund our work.”

All those taking part in the event will receive a race medal and t-shirt. The entry fee is only €20. You can register online and receive your race pack by contacting either [email protected] or www.galwaysimon.ie Places are limited so register now to avoid disappointment and let’s ‘Put Homelessness on the Run’.
