An Athlone building designed by prominent local architect, Mel McGerr, has been shortlisted for a major international award.
The Irish Life Science Global HQ building located at Moydrum Business Park, has been announced as a finalist in the award for ‘Excellence in Architectural Technology - Small to Medium’ category.
The awards, presented by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT ), recognise the exceptional contribution that architectural technology practices and professionals make to the built environment. Previous award winners include Ferrari World (Abu Dhabi ) and the Manchester Central Convention Complex.
The Irish Life Sciences building was designed by Athlone architect, Mel McGerr, Director at MMA Architects. This nomination is further success for the local architect whose deep energy retrofit of a house in Tullamore was a winner at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards in April of this year.
Award assessment is based upon the innovative application of architectural technology against a set criteria for each award. Judges will look for robust and functional designs that are constructed economically, environmentally sustainable, and of durable performance. The building was shortlisted for its exceptional performance when assessed against these credentials.
The shortlisting for this award is not only a source of professional pride for Mel McGerr, but also a moment of celebration for the entire architectural community in Athlone which has many architectural highlights and is growing as a hub for innovative and sustainable design.
The awards winners will be announced at a gala event which will be held in London on October 20.
